An Evening Or Two With Andrew McMahon And A Bonus Jack's Mannequin Show

Andrew McMahon's solo tour was a welcome departure from the normal style and pace of his Jack's Mannequin shows. "An Evening with Andrew McMahon" as one of my tickets called it, felt more like and episode of VH1 Storytellers. The audience was let in to Andrew's world and the stories behind some of his songs. The most intriguing story by far was that of "Walking By" where he explains how the line "my cheshire cat doorstop..." came to be.

There was much more conversation and audience interaction at the 2nd New York City show. Andrew brought out a box of fortune cookies that he welcomingly tossed to members of the audience, prompting them to read aloud the fortune.

He was quite animated when he "yelled" at a girl by the stage to stop requesting songs, and even more animated when he called out a guy who had been shouting Konstantine all night. "...if I play it now I'll have to play it every night, and it's a long song..."

After 2 solo shows, a full band college show felt like the normal Jack's sets, more singing, less talking and very Everthing in Transit heavy, most likely because of the college audience.

He closed out the set with a ridiculously energetic cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl" where he pounded the keys with the seat of his stool.
